ELLEN COWIE ~ Canadian Fine Artist
Ellen Cowie's oil painting has evolved into a very distinct and recognizable style. She raised 6 children while living across Canada in isolated areas, which accounts for her unique style. Her vivid oil representations of everyday life often leads to treasured commissioned works. Ellen is passionate in exploring a wide range of motifs on her canvas with deliberate freedom, sharing her sense of optimism with the viewer.
Ellen “free hand” sketches the composition, in paint, directly on the canvas. She often builds the painting with thin layers of paint. She strives to retain the freshness, light, and energy of her initial brushstrokes throughout the entire process. For 10 years she opened her seasonal gallery in Muskoka at Foot’s Bay on Lake Joseph from 2002 to 2011 representing many artists.
For 7 years Ellen was juried into Toronto’s The Artist Project until she decided it was time to concentrate on painting once gaining permanent gallery representation in Toronto.
Ellen’s artistic services were contracted by Scholastic Canada to illustrate a children’s book, “On Saturday”, part of Literacy Place for the Early Years Extension Package for teachers and librarians. Her greatest honour was to have been chosen by the Royal Canadian Mint to design the first 2 coins of a new Canadian Landscapes series of $200 silver coins: “Towering Forest” in 2013 and “Coastal Waters” in 2015.
